Summary
Damiana (Turnera afrodisiaca – Turneraceae) is an American shrub that can be found in subtropical regions of the continent, including Mexico, Baja California, Texas, Antilles, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, and some regions of Africa (Namibia). Damiana is popularly used as an antidepressant, eupeptic, laxative, and aphrodisiac. Although this latter property has not yet been verified, the use of damiana during short periods of time as a tonic and energizing agent is perfectly acceptable. Some research has also focused on its action within the digestive and CNS.
